What life could he have offered them under those circumstances? As this is an allegory for the social and political climate of the time, the death of Clay is the death, or incarceration in prison, of all those who stood up to the unjust laws, and attempted to be in control of the conversation as much as any white Americans could be.
Centered squarely on the Negro-white conflict, both Dutchman and The Slave are literally shocking plays–in ideas, in language, in honest anger. Everything I always thought a night in the theater should be. Why is Clay accepting this discourse and then rejecting it so strongly? Frightening and provocative, the entire experience. However, Dutchman is an important play that I feel still holds up today as an important piece of american racial discourse being explored through an artistic medium. In a black president, love him or hate him, is serving his second term.
He explains that these segregatory actions assuage black Americans’ anger towards whites and distracts them from accessing the “white man’s intellectual legacy”. Like a feverish nightmare in New York’s underbelly.
While Baraka’s writing in both plays is clearly didactic, it never comes off as preachy. The ending of Dutchman is laughable – it reminds me of something a moderately gifted student in a high school creative writing course would come bzraka with.

What I remember best was the extraordinary performance given by Patricia Powers, and the forty-five second blackout I had to time in synch with Patricia’s arm coming down in a signal for the other “white” passengers to begin their murderous torture of the one black man on board. The subject-manner of these plays are still amir in societies today and Jones really critiques what society wants the public to see vs what it really is.
On the other hand, I applaud L. DUTCHMAN is still at a place where it has relevance and may even prove prophetic or iconic or it may fade away as so many works of art have, not because it wasn’t great but because the work it had to do has been done and it is dutchnan time to move on.
You were preaching the murder of all white people. If all this, why only four stars? Dutchman is a little too difficult for my 10th graders to navigate and hard to dramatize but I am definitely advocating for The Slave to be on our reading list for the fall.
